Discovering Lanzarote: What to do while staying at our villas – Cueva de los Verdes

This week we continue sharing Lanzarote’s treasures with you. This is the fourth in the series on exciting and unusual things to do when you come to stay at one of our luxury villas, and today we will focus on another volcanic attraction.

As we noted last time, Lanzarote is volcanic in origin, and there are many jameos, or collapsed lava tubes, on the island. Today we want to talk about Cueva de los Verdes, which is located only a five minute drive from our villas at Finca la Corona. Part of one of the longest galleries in the world, Cueva de los Verdes is 6 kilometres above sea level in length (with another 1.5 kilometres, called the Tunnel de la Atlantida, below sea level).

Like other jameos, Cueva de los Verdes (“Greens’ Cave” in English, named after the family that used to inhabit the caves) was created when Montaña La Corona erupted about 4,000 years ago. Here, a major stream of lava was ejected toward the east coast and into the sea, leaving behind the tubes through which the lava formerly flowed. As with the Jameos del Agua, the lava tubes have collapsed in some places, and in the 1960s two kilometres of the stunning Cueva were illuminated with a colorful light system. As you wander through the caves you can think of the locals who used them as a refuge from pirates and slave raiders during the seventeenth century. Do make sure to bring a jacket with you, as the caves can get a bit cold. There are also some optical illusions on the tour…but we don’t want to spoil the surprise, so we won’t say anything more about that!

So when you come to visit us, make sure to put Cueva de los Verdes on your itinerary. While you’re staying in Finca la Corona, you can also enjoy hang gliding off the Famara cliffs, visiting our pristine local beaches, and visiting the attraction we’ll talk about next time, when we leave the lava tubes behind in search of higher ground. In the meantime, contact us with any questions you might have about Lanzarote or our luxury villas!
