19 Feb Discovering Lanzarote: What to do while staying at our villas – César Manrique
This week we thought we would share another of Lanzarote’s treasures with you, to give you a better idea of what awaits you when you visit one of our luxury villas. This is the second in a series on that theme, and today we will share the islands most famous native son.
César Manrique was born in 1919 in Puerto Naos, Arrecife. He was trained as an artist and architect in Madrid and New York City before returning to Lanzarote “with the intention of turning my native island into one of the more beautiful places in the planet, due to the endless possibilities that Lanzarote had to offer.” Over the following 30 years, he did just that.
As a pioneer of abstract art in Spain, Manrique considered himself first and foremost to be a painter. His work in city planning usually included elements of sculpture, such as his famous work Fecundidad. As an architect, he championed Lanzarote’s traditional architecture and built the Casa del Campesino as a model and example of what the island should strive for. Some of his other buildings were integrated into the natural landscape and can be seen at places like Mirador del Rio and Auditorio Jameos del Agua. He loved the Lanzarote landscape so much that he built his own home on the lava fields; a home that is now La Fundación César Manrique, which is open to the public. Here you can join the more than 300,000 yearly visitors to Manrique’s unusual and inspiring home. La Fundación has been a non profit private institution since 1992, and regularly sponsors programs designed to support the conservation, study, and promotion of César Manrique’s work and Lanzarote art in general, as well as activities and programs that support respect for the natural environment.
So when you come to visit our lovely island, make sure to visit some of the works of César Manrique. Next time, we will tell you more about one of our cultural treasures that is adorned with his paintings.
